What intermittent fasting is
Intermittent fasting (IF) means eating within a set window each day and not eating outside it. The common schedules are named by fasting:eating hours:
- 16:8 — fast 16 hours, eat within 8 (for example 12:00–20:00). The easiest place to start.
- 18:6 — a 6-hour eating window, often two meals.
- 20:4 — a 4-hour window; usually one large meal and a snack.
- OMAD — one meal a day, about a 1-hour window.
Calories still decide weight loss
Fasting works for many people because a shorter eating window makes it easier to eat less — not because the clock burns fat by itself. Eat 2,800 kcal inside an 8-hour window and you won't lose weight. That's why the most useful fasting tracker is one that also counts calories: the window keeps you structured, the calorie ring keeps you honest.
How to track fasting in Calories AI Calculator
- Open Settings → Intermittent Fasting and turn it on (Premium).
- Pick 16:8, 18:6, 20:4, OMAD or a custom window, and set when your eating window starts.
- The Today screen now shows a live countdown: time left in your eating window, or time until it opens.
- Turn on reminders to get a notification when the eating window opens and when the fast begins.
- Log meals as usual — by photo, barcode or from your library — and watch the calorie ring alongside the timer.
Tips for your first two weeks
- Start with 16:8 and move the window to fit your social life, not the other way round.
- Water, black coffee and plain tea don't break a fast; log water so you don't mistake thirst for hunger.
- Judge results by the weekly weight trend, not by a single morning weigh-in.
- If you feel dizzy, unwell or have a medical condition, stop and talk to a doctor. Fasting isn't advised during pregnancy or with a history of eating disorders.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best intermittent fasting schedule for beginners?
16:8 — 16 hours of fasting and an 8-hour eating window — is the easiest to start with. Many people simply skip breakfast and eat between noon and 8 pm.
Do I still need to count calories when intermittent fasting?
Yes, if your goal is weight loss. Fasting helps by making it easier to eat less, but total calories still decide whether you lose weight. Tracking both in one app shows whether the window is actually cutting your intake.
Can I track intermittent fasting and calories in the same app?
Yes. Calories AI Calculator includes a fasting timer with 16:8, 18:6, 20:4, OMAD and custom windows, shown as a live countdown on the same screen as your calories, macros and water. Fasting is part of Premium.
